Managing moisture: WUFI training announced

Pro Clima has teamed up with Fraunhofer IBP to offer training in WUFI, a C-Program for calculating the coupled heat and moisture transfer in building components.

Analysis of the coupling of heat and moisture is known as hygrothermics. It is well known that high moisture levels result in higher heat losses, and that temperature conditions in building components influence moisture transport.

Hygrothermal analysis can predict the transfer of both heat and moisture through and within complicated building elements.

With condensation and water vapour management included in this year’s National Construction Code (NCC) for commercial buildings, the training comes at an opportune time.

“The new section in the NCC 2019 requires the risks associated with water vapour and condensation, such as mould and structural integrity, to be managed to minimise the impact on occupants,” says course presenter Jesse Clarke, M.AIRAH, Building Science Manager for Pro Clima Australia.

“WUFI allows architects and designers to use modelling to reliably manage moisture and the potential associated risks while still in the design phase of a project. It uses outdoor weather conditions, indoor conditions and material selection to inform this analysis.”

The training sessions come on the back of a strong response to the introductory WUFI workshop at last year’s AIRAH Building Physics Forum in Wollongong.

Three seminars cater for all levels of users: WUFI Basics, WUFI Users and WUFI Advanced. There is also an information evening to help those interested choose the most appropriate course for them.

“The seminars provide an opportunity for anyone, regardless of their current experience and knowledge, to take advantage of this tool and integrate it as part of their design process,” says Clarke.

AIRAH members who register using the code AIRAHWUFI2019 will receive a 20 per cent discount off the course fee.
