Spotlight on building services

The Materials and Embodied Carbon Leaders’ Alliance (MECLA) is hosting free events across Australia on Thursday, April 18 to highlight the importance of building services.

MECLA says building services are an often under-appreciated aspect of the embodied carbon conversation. Building services represent around 15 per cent of the upfront carbon in commercial buildings, and 30 per cent of the whole-of-life embodied carbon.

“HVAC, refrigeration, fire safety, escalators, lifts, and lighting account for significant upfront embodied carbon in a building, and an even larger portion of the whole-of-life embodied carbon of an asset because of maintenance,” says the organisation.

These events will explore how building services and carbon is developing in Australia, such as how the complex range of materials and manufacturing processes that are involved in building services complicate the carbon calculations related to products.

Presenters will include:

  • Jennifer Elias – Associate Sustainable Design, Atelier Ten
  • Andrew Nagarajah – Senior Engineer Sustainability, A.G. Coombs Advisory
  • Gary Knox, F.AIRAH – Lead Engineer, Daikin Australia.

The events will take place at the Aurecon offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide. Registrants will be sent the attendee information before the events.
