The consultation on NSW’s draft Design and Building Practitioners Regulation – which introduces professional registration of engineers – closes on January 11.
The regulation includes the details of registration schemes for design and building practitioners and engineers who work on multistorey, multi-unit residential apartment buildings. Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation Kevin Anderson has described it as “the biggest overhaul of NSW building laws in the state’s history.”
The changes will require:
- Engineers to register to provide professional engineering work
- Design and building practitioners to declare their work complies with the Building Code of Australia
- All practitioners to meet continuing professional development and code of practice requirements.
The regulation is aligned with similar schemes being initiated in other states and territories, and with the existing BPEQ system in Queensland. The NSW regulation is set to start on July 1, 2021.
The public can provide feedback through a survey, a quick poll, or through a detailed submission.
